My name is Jonathan and I completed a Bachelor of Science (Advanced) with Majors in 'Biochemistry' and 'Molecular Biology and Genetics' at the University of Sydney in 2018. I was awarded the Charles Perkins Centre Summer Research Scholarship for 2018/19 where I worked in the James lab on various projects exploring the activation and activity of the serine/threonine kinase Akt (Protein Kinase B). In 2019 I plan on building upon my understanding of Akt by completing an honours project elucidating the role radical oxygen species (ROS) play in the regulation of Akt. My aim for this project is to contribute a deeper understanding of ROS as not just a waste product excessively present under pathophysiological conditions, but as an important signalling molecule under healthy cellular conditions. I additionally hope to provide a better understanding of Akt recruitment, activation and activity, allowing for better treatments to the diseases Akt is implicated in, such as cancer and type 2 diabetes.
